North County Incorporated is excited to announce that it has received a $6,000 grant from the U.S. Bank Foundation, which will be used to advance the organization's efforts in business retention and community leadership development in North County. Eagan Center at Florissant Valley Park with an outdoor performance and its renowned fireworks display. St. Louis Cardinals pitcher and Hazelwood West High School graduate Kyle McClellan will make an appearance, as well as other Cardinal players (based on availability). North County CARES, an initiative at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley, presents "Bridges Out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities", a one-day workshop on July 17th that will address poverty issues that affect program retention and school achievement. St. Louis Mills will host Simon Kidgets® Club Safe Summer on July 18th from noon-2 p.m. near the Play Area at St. Louis Mills. The Florissant Parks Foundation will hold its 4th Annual Florissant Parks Foundation Golf Tournament on July 20th. The tournament will begin at noon and costs $125 per player. The City of Ferguson's Parks and Recreation Department for being presented with the Lifesaver Community Award by the Red Cross for encouraging water safety through Red Cross learn-to-swim lifeguarding lessons and First Aid/CPR/AED training. The City of Ferguson's Parks and Recreation Department, as a Red Cross Authorized Provider, has taught approximately 470 children in learn-to-swim classes and certified 72 lifeguards.
Hazelwood School District's Arrowpoint Elementary, Russell Elementary, Hazelwood North Middle, Hazelwood Southeast Middle and Walker Elementary for being recognized with Awards of Excellence for their exemplary Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) programs from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Dr. Chris Wright
Hazelwood School District's Dr. Chris Wright for being named a State Education Commissioner finalist. Dr. Wright is among three finalists to become commissioner of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The State will hold a press conference on July 2nd at 10:30 a.m. in Jefferson City to announce who they have selected. The State Education Commissioner is the top official for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Lambert-St. Louis International Airport for having their credit rating boosted to A- with a stable outlook by Standard & Poor, the nation's leading credit ranking agency. This ratings increase comes as the city looks to sell up to $125 million in airport revenue bonds to pay for improvements in the terminals and elsewhere, as part of Lambert's "Airport Experience" renovation project. North County Suburban Journal's Carolyn Marty for being named Managing Editor of the Suburban Journals in West County, South County and Jefferson County. Marty will also continue to oversee the North County Journals, where she has worked for the past 25 years. Pattonville School District's Transportation Department for receiving a Total Fleet Excellence Award from the Missouri State Highway Patrol for excelling on its 2009 school bus inspection program. The districts' fleet of 65 buses had a 98.45 percent passing rate during the first round of inspections and 100 percent passed after minor repairs were made on the same day. Riverview Gardens School District's Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC) for recently receiving recognition of excellence by earning the status of accreditation by the Missouri Accreditation of Programs for Children and Youth. CLICK HERE for more information.
SSM DePaul Health Center for winning the 2009 Premier Award for Quality, which recognizes top healthcare organizations that consistently provide outstanding and efficient patient care and set the standard in clinical excellence. SSM DePaul Health Center's Mary Reedy, with Premier Care Orthopedics, for being named "National Orthopedic Nurse of the Year", the highest award an orthopedics nurse can receive from the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses (NAON). CLICK HERE  [PDF] to read the entire press release.
The University of Missouri-St. Louis's roller hockey club for winning a national championship, a feat that no other university-affiliated team has done in 36 years. On April 5th, the Tritons hockey club, sanctioned by UMSL, defeated Lindenwood University to capture the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association Division I Championship.
University of Missouri-St. Louis faculty members for recently being recognized with top honors. Richard Cook, chairman of the Department of English at UMSL and author of "Alfred Kazin: A Biography", recently won a Guggenheim Fellowship Award and said he would use his fellowship to compile an annotated selection of entries from Kazin's journals. Robert Ricklefs, Curators' Professor of Biology at UMSL, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the only academic from Missouri on the 2009 list of new members. Election to the academy is considered one of the highest honors for a scientist or engineer and recognizes a career of distinguished research.
The Ferguson-Florissant School District Challenger Learning Center was recently awarded a grant of $7,040 from the Boeing Employees Community Fund. This grant will allow Challenger to purchase an interactive whiteboard for the Discovery Room, as well as a new computer. CLICK HERE [PDF] to read more.
Christian Hospital recently awarded $1,000 scholarships at their Christian Hospital Auxiliary general meeting and luncheon to North County students interested in becoming healthcare professionals. The City of Florissant's Historic Florissant Inc. presented three awards to North County community leaders in May. Edward Bennett, owner of Hendel's Market Café received the Lois Zimmerman Preservation Award for a new addition to the restaurant. The Florissant Valley Fire Protection District was recognized for the design of its new fire station and administration building. John Caravelli, president of Citizens Bank of Florissant, was honored for his support of Historic Florissant Inc.'s preservation efforts.
Emerson has landed a contract with Switzerland-based Lonza Group to provide engineering and design services and digital automation architecture and control technologies for a new Lonza pharmaceutical plant in Singapore. CLICK HERE to read the entire article from the St. Louis Business Journal.
Governor Jay Nixon recently announced tax cuts that will eliminate the franchise tax for thousands of small businesses. CLICK HERE for more details.
The Hazelwood Fire Department has issued a medical alert it received from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding stolen vials of the insulin Levemir. Many of the vials have reappeared and are being sold in the U.S. market, but some may not have been stored or handled properly and could pose health risks to patients who use them. Hazelwood School District recently hired two new principals. Dr. Christa Warner was appointed as the new principal of Cold Water Elementary School and Sheilah Fitzgerald was appointed as the new principal of Jana Elementary School. Lambert-St. Louis International Airport and USO of Missouri, Inc. recently unveiled a major transformation to the James J. McDonnell USO that serves thousands of military members and their families. The Marc Bulger Foundation and Dave Glover from 97.1FM Talk radio raised $300,000 for the renovation project; Bulger, the St. Louis Rams quarterback, contributed over $150,000 of his own funds. Pattonville School District's Rose Acres Elementary School recently dedicated a playground in the memory of former teacher Roseann Melville, who taught kindergarten and first grade at Rose Acres before passing away in May 2005. Ritenour School District groundbreaking
Ritenour School District recently broke ground for a new high school auditorium and classroom addition. This new addition to Ritenour High School, expected to be completed in August 2011, will feature a 750-seat auditorium, classrooms for band, choir, drama and orchestra use, a student art exhibit area and more. Ritenour School District has named new assistant principals at three different schools in the district. Denean Steward will be the new assistant principal at Wyland Elementary School and Alicia Collins will be the new assistant principal at Ritenour High School. SSM DePaul received a generous gift of $20,000 from the Florissant License Office, which is operated by the Rotary Club of Florissant. The money will benefit the DePaul Foundation's efforts to raise money for its $10.3 million Emergency Department renovation/expansion. To read more about this donation, CLICK HERE [PDF].

SSM DePaul Health Center recently invested in a $1 million O-Arm® Imaging System that will offer surgeons real-time 3-D images, as well as multi-plane, 2-D and fluoroscopic imaging. The O-Arm's electromechanical features give surgeons easy patient access and allow them to safely perform surgery in a less-invasive manner.
