Metro Seeks
Public Comment on Transit Service Restoration
Plan
Today, Metro's Board of
Commissioners authorized Metro staff to proceed with a
transit service restoration plan. The plan,
presented at today's Metro Board Meeting, will allow
Metro to return transit service to approximately
one-third of the corridors and destinations the Agency
was forced to abandon on March 30, 2009 due to a lack of
funds sufficient to operate the system.
The proposed partial
restoration of transit service is possible because the
Missouri State Legislature approved a one-time $12
million emergency appropriation that would fund a
portion of the $35 million in transit service
discontinued on March 30. The bill requires
Missouri Governor Jay Nixon's signature to become
law.
The proposed service restorations are
designed to provide the most needed transit service
throughout the St. Louis region. This service
could begin as early as August 2009 and would last
for a period of one year. Click here for details of the plan,
including information on how to submit a public
comment. All comments must be received by 5:00
p.m. on Monday, June
8. |

Event Will
Commemorate the 14 Winners of This Year's Poetry In
Motion Contest
More than 130 poets submitted over
330 poems for the 2009 Poetry in Motion Contest,
and the fourteen winning local poets will read the
fifteen selected poems at the 2009 Poetry in Motion
Reading and Reception.
The
Poetry in Motion Reading and Reception takes
place on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at the Regional
Arts Commission, located at 6128 Delmar Boulevard in
University City. The reception starts at 6:00
p.m., followed by the reading at 6:30 p.m. Light
refreshments will be offered, with music provided by
Farshid Etniko. The program will open with a
presentation by David Allen, Director of Metro Arts in
Transit, and will feature readings from the winning
poets, poet Jacqueline Masei and guest of honor,
Missouri Poet Laureate Walter Bargen. The reading
and reception are free and open to the
public. The
fifteen poems were chosen by a panel of four judges, and
the selected poetry will be displayed on MetroLink
trains and Metro buses for the next year, as part of the
Poetry Society of America’s Poetry in Motion
program. Inaugurated in 1992, the program was
developed to enhance the commuting experience and make
public transportation more enjoyable and
dynamic.
The event is made possible with
financial support from the Regional Arts Commission and
the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency. A list
of the winning poems can be found at http://www.marketvolt.com/custapp/cc.aspx?CM=86344950&X=70004486&MailingID=62399&LS=5. |
