UMSL history is highlighted in former Chancellor Blanche Touhill’s new book, A Photographic History of the University of Missouri-St. Louis. On Sept. 25, Touhill will sign copies of her book in the St. Louis Mercantile Library’s space in the Thomas Jefferson Library. There is a walk-in session set for 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Ferguson-Florissant School District honored five students who received the UMSL College of Fine Arts and Communications Dean’s Award for Creative Achievement in the Arts. The award includes a $1,000 UMSL scholarship and recognizes high school students in the visual and performing arts who display outstanding talent, leadership, and responsibility in one or more high school arts programs.
Ferguson-Florissant School District Board of Education will honor the achievements of students and staff at its Oct. 9. meeting. Cross Keys Middle School student Joseph "Gus" Kickham was named District III Teen Volunteer of the Year by the Missouri Health Care Association; and Combs Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Christine Ries received the 2013 Outstanding Elementary School Science Teacher of Missouri award from the Science Teachers of Missouri.

Hendel’s Market Café and Piano Bar: Henry F. Hendel was honored Sept. 25 for being a great ambassador for Florissant. He operated Hendel’s Market for 47 years and an active member American Legion Post 444 and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Hazelwood School District inducted four new Hall of Fame members in September for Hazelwood West High School: Steve Mayes, Class of ‘93 (soccer); Robert Riti, Class of ’95 (football); Frank E. Burkhart, 1974-2006 (administrator & baseball coach); LaMark Brown, Class of ’07 (football) and current member of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings; and Ben Solari, Class of ’08 (swimming)
City of Florissant’s former Council Representative Margaret Connors was honored with a Community Service Award. She currently is Vice President of the Florissant Historical Society and is a past president of the Florissant Fine Arts Council.
City of Florisssant Councilman Keith Schildroth reached a milestone with his 20th Friends of Betty Schildroth Golf Tournament at the Golf Club of Florissant. Over $125,000 has been raised for the hospice program at Mercy Hospital.
City of Hazelwood police officer Mike Monticelli and his K-9 partner Onyxx were among 13 K-9 teams honored at a 2013 awards ceremony recently held at The American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog in Ballwin. They were recognized for outstanding response to two May criminal reports.

Pattonville School District senior Jared Hunsaker, was selected as a National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalist. He’s one of 16,000 nationwide out of 1.5 million juniors who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
One of Florissant's most notable historic sites, St. Ferdinand Catholic Church celebrated its 225th anniversary on Sept. 20. The commemorative Mass was celebrated by St. Louis Archbishop Robert Carlson.
UMSL Chancellor Tom George was honored in September at the Founders Dinner for his 10th year in leadership.

City of Hazelwood hired Matthew Zimmerman on Oct. 30 as the new City Manager. He has 30 years of local government experience and spent the past six years in Emporia, Ks. as their city manager. He succeeds Edwin Carlstrom who retired July 25th after 34 years on the job. Click here for more information.

Ferguson-Florissant School District‘s Dr. Art McCoy, an NCI Board Member was featured on Channel 5 news Sept. 13 for his effort to raise nearly $100,000 to fund transportation vouchers for students who transferred into the district this year.
