As North County continues to grow,
it still takes great pride in its rich history.
"North St. Louis County has a rich tradition
of historic sites throughout. They include
components of Native American culture, French
and Spanish colonial society as well as early
19th Century America."
JD Magurany, Director
St.
Louis County Historic Sites

St. Ferdinand Shrine
|
One of the few remaining vestiges of St.
Louis' Spanish past is the Old
St. Ferdinand Shrine in Florissant. More
than 180 years old, the Shrine is a popular
attraction for both residents and visitors.
It includes beautiful stained glass windows,
collections of religious items and unique
relics. Several interesting relics were discovered
in an historical dig on the original Shrine
grounds just this past summer.

| One of the most influential men
in early U.S. history made his home in North
County. Daniel Bissell was a general during
the Revolutionary War. After the War of 1812,
he moved to St. Louis and built an extravagant
mansion along what is now Bellefontaine Road.
The General Daniel Bissell House is one of the
oldest homes in St. Louis and is now open to
the public. On display are many original furnishings,
historical documents signed by George Washington
and Thomas Jefferson and interesting facts about
St. Louis life in the 19th century. The home
is also a popular place for weddings, receptions
and reunions. |
|
Fort
Belle Fontaine Park, once commanded by
Daniel Bissell, is located just a few miles
from the Bissell
House. Established in 1805, it was a U.S.
Military Post and served as a launching or
stopover point for a number of expeditions
including that of Captains Lewis and Clark.

"We know there are a number of sites
here that are associated with the expedition,
none more important than Fort Bellefontaine
which has a long association with the history
of this community as well a connection to
the Lewis & Clark Expedition."
Robert Archibald, President,
Missouri Historical Society

This historic site now offers
a 3 mile long hiking and biking trail that
features interpretive signs about the expedition
and the historical significance of this county
park located in Spanish Lake.

Another piece of North County
history can be found at the Payne-Gentry house.
Located in Bridgeton, this 19th century home
is claimed to be one of the most haunted houses
in the country. This was the residence of
Dr. Elbridge Payne who practiced his medicine
from the home. Listed on the national register
of historic places, visitors have claimed
to see the ghostly images of a woman dressed
in period clothing and of children playing
around the large tree in the backyard. You
can see for youself when you schedule a tour....
